Mail Online to share content with People’s Daily of China

MailOnline and The People’s Daily of China have agreed a content-sharing deal that the UK publisher hopes will help fuel its continued digital growth.

Martin Clarke, Mail Online’s publisher, said that the partnership, which allows both organisations to cherry pick each other’s content, was sensible given the UK’s official policy to foster closer trade and cultural ties with China.

According to the latest available figures for June, Mail Online recorded 236m global unique browsers and an average of 15.1m a day. Like other media groups, the Mail Online’s parent company, Daily Mail and General Trust, is seeking to increase its digital advertising to offset the sharp decline in print revenues threatening the newspaper industry.

“As the most populous nation on earth and one of its most dynamic economies, China is an increasing source of stories for outward-looking global publishers like MOL,” Mr Clarke wrote. “We believe this relationship broadens our coverage there and also helps us better understand the country’s social and political structures.”

The deal, first reported by The Guardian this week, was signed last year. Two senior executives from the Mail, former managing editor Guy Zitter and general manager international James Leaver, attended and spoke at an international media conference hosted last month by the People’s Daily in Beijing.

The Mail is not the first London-based publishing company to agree a partnership with Chinese media. Telegraph Media Group and a number of western news publishers have agreements to publish sponsored content written by journalists from the English language, state-run China Daily newspaper.

However, the People’s Daily is listed as one of the institutions under the direct control of China’s ruling communist party. Its president, Yang Zhenwu, whose previous job was head of propaganda for Shanghai, has a party rank equivalent to a minister.

Kerry Brown, professor of Chinese studies and director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College, London, said that the communist party was seeking out relationships with major western media organisations to help improve its image in the west.
