Chinahas signed a long-awaited annual contract for the fertiliser potash with BPC, the export arm of Belaruskali, at a higher than expected price of $219 a tonne.

BPC said it had agreed with a consortium of Chinese buyers — Sinochem, CNAMPGC, and Cnooc— to supply potash at that price until the end of the year.

The contract is positive news for the potash sector, which has been struggling with increased competition and lower agricultural commodity prices. The spot market for the crop nutrient has been trading at around $220 a tonne, about 40 per cent lower than last year.

Elena Kudryavets, the director-general of BPC, said: “We are confident that the Chinese deal will contribute to stabilising the global potash market and secure its upward advance.”

Other large producers, including Uralkali and Canpotex — the legal North American export cartel comprising of PotashCorp, Mosaic and Agrium — are expected to follow suit, signing contracts withChinaat the same level over the next few weeks.

PotashCorp rose 2.3 per cent to C$22.35 in Toronto and Mosaic gained 3 per cent to $28.23 in New York.

Chinahad been haggling for a lowball price, with the country’s buyers starting negotiations at $150 a tonne earlier this year, according to executives at Uralkali. Last year’s contract price withChinawas at $315.India, unable to wait for theChinaagreement, signed a $227 a tonne agreement with BPC in June. Last year’s Indian agreement was $17 higher than that ofChina, and analysts had expected this year’s Chinese contract, if signed, to be about $210 a tonne.

The price, while higher than originally anticipated, is still far lower than last year’s agreement, as well as the $400-$500 levels seen when potash prices were supported by high grain prices.

“It’s another low number,” said Oliver Hatfield, director of fertilisers at consultancy Integer.

The 2016 price is the lowest since 2006-07. The 2007 contracts were not officially disclosed, but are estimated at slightly above or equivalent to $219, according to Paul Burnside, potash specialist at CRU.
