Ilkka Paananen, Supercell’s chief executive, said a big attraction of the deal was gaining access to the 300m gamers that use Tencent. “One of the big things that drives us is trying to reach as many players as possible,” he added.

The acquisition, which was supported by a group of minority investors, is the latest in a wave of large Chinese overseas deals this year. The overall number of outbound deals made by Chinese companies is nearly $120bn, shattering last year’s record of $111.5bn, according to Thomson Reuters.
