The Chinese company behind the Mi Band fitness tracker, which is second only to Fitbit in global sales volumes of wearable devices, is seeking a $1bn valuation in a new round of funding as it looks to expand globally.

Huami, headquartered in Beijing, is best known as a manufacturing partner to Xiaomi, a leading Chinese smartphone maker. Huami’s $15 wristband, the latest version of which tracks steps, sleep and heart rate, is sold under Xiaomi’s “Mi” branding and primarily distributed through its online store.

As one of Xiaomi’s top-selling accessories, more than 24m of the Mi wristbands have been sold in China since launch. IDC, the technology market researcher, said last month that the Mi band made Xiaomi and Huami together the second largest players in the wearable device market behind Fitbit by unit sales in the second quarter of this year. With a market share of 14 per cent, Huami outstripped Apple’s Watch, which saw its sales decline.

Huami, founded in 2014, said its revenues rose to more than $150m last year. While IDC reported that sales of the Mi band were flat year-on-year in the second quarter, Huami said it was on track to increase revenues by more than 50 per cent this year, thanks in part to international sales.

Xiaomi invested a small sum in Huami two years ago, as part of its drive to create a network of connected devices to pair with its smartphones, which has included TV streaming boxes, electric bikes and air purifiers.

In total, Huami has raised $35m to date from investors including Sequoia, Morningside and Banyan Capital. While it is already cash flow positive, it is now seeking further funding as it gears up for expansion outside China, including the US, where it has launched under the Amazfit brand.

Initial discussions with potential investors suggest a potential valuation of $800m to $1bn, Huami said.

Of its 340 employees, about 40 are in Silicon Valley, where it has much of its software and product design team.
