Lionel Messi, the Barcelona footballer, has been sentenced to 21 months in prison by a Spanish court after being found guilty of three counts of tax fraud.

Mr Messi’s father Jorge was found guilty on the same charges and also sentenced to 21 months in prison. The court in Barcelona also imposed fines of €2.09m on Mr Messi and €1.5m on his father.

“The sentence is not final and can be appealed to the supreme court,” a court statement said. First-time offenders in Spain who receive a prison sentence of less than 24 months normally have their terms suspended.

The actions taken by Mr Messi and his father were part of a “strategy”, the court added.

Mr Messi, who appeared in court last month, was accused of defrauding the tax authorities by using offshore accounts to conceal earnings in a trial that centred on the alleged unlawful activities of his father. But authorities said the Argentine player knew enough to also be charged in the case.

Spain’s tax agency had demanded heavy fines and prison sentences, while prosecutors had been seeking a jail sentence plus fines equivalent to the amount allegedly defrauded. Both men had denied any wrongdoing.
